The ways in which Melinda Doolittle has ruined my life

It was on the 26th of June 2007 that Tiernan started a thread on the message boards of melindafan.net that started one of the most important threads in the history of Melinda’s Backups. It started

"Okay, this is in response to the thread listing all of the many blessings we've received because of
Melinda. I'm here to list the ways in which she has ruined my life!!!"

and proceeded to list 14 separate ways that had happened.

“Okay, this is in response to the thread listing all of the many blessings we’ve received because of Melinda. I’m here to list the ways in which she has ruined my life!!!”

and proceeded to list 14 separate ways that had happened.

It was not so much these 14 points, or the fact that a whole set of other backups realised that they agreed with them, but the fact that this started a whole set of discussions about how each backup was more obsessed than the next, leading eventually for one of them to bring into the conversation about being captured and locked into a mental institution that just happened to be at Nutbush (from the song Nutbush City Limits).

The Meadows at Yosemite National Park

It was then that the story started, a story about escaping for the asylum, hiding in the outhouse (think about the words to the song) and waiting to be rescued by backups who turned up on motorcycles. But the story spiraled from there, into a romp across the country, with kidnapping and rescuing of Melinda and the eventual Melinda’s Backups first concert with Melinda at the meadows at Yosemite National Park.

The fantasy had taken to the end of July to get this far, but little did we realise that by November there actually would be a real Melinda’s Backups first concert and party – not in Yosemite, but just outside Nashville, at Franklin, Melinda’s home town. You can read about that in my blog post here

Anyway, Melinda’s Backups all left melindafan.net and setup their own web site and message forum (“http://www.melindasbackups.com/forum (registration required). Before we left we were able to capture the whole thread and turn it into a .pdf file.

Melinda Sings Happy Birthday to Me personally (March 2009 – my 58th Birthday)

Melinda Doolittle Sings “Happy Birthday” to me for my 58th Birthday.

I was on cloud nine when I received the following video

I have been puzzling over the reference to “Mr President” but I think there are two possible explanations

  • I was close to being the president of Melinda’s Backups and it might have been a reference to that (in fact I never quite was, although several people assumed it to be the case.  I resigned from the leadership team as it broke up because I failed to get everyone to agree not to fight with each other).
  • There is the same reference when Marylin Munro sings it for John F Kennedy

I am not sure if its either one (or even a combination) of those two facts.

An Internet Clan became Friends on the Internet

It was in the summer that we at Melinda’s Backups first came up with the idea of a party for the backups to attend and get to meet each other for the first time. As fans of Melinda Doolittle we had only talked on the internet, following our favourite artist, but never meeting.

It was in the summer that we at Melinda’s Backups first came up with the idea of a party for the backups to attend and get to meet each other for the first time. As fans of Melinda Doolittle we had only talked on the internet, following our favourite artist, but never meeting.

Then someone noticed that she was doing a benefit concert for The Boiler Room a small theatre in her home town where she used to perform. Someone else said they would get VIP tickets to go, and the first trickles of an avalanche were born. Slowly but surely more people said they would go. My friends suggested I consider coming from England and I told them it was too expensive, but one morning I actually looked up what a flight and hotel for a long weekend would be, and I realised I could afford it.

When the American’s heard a “Brit” was coming the momentum gathered, and another Brit (Gale) joined me and someone from Hawaii decided they were coming too.

So in the end 40 of Melinda’s Backups joined her at her first concert in Franklin Tennessee, and a fabulous party took place afterwards, where our idol came to join her family.

Melinda Doolittle – a breath of fresh air.

I starting watching American Idol this year after I heard that Leona Lewis – see Will Leona Lewis last?  was due to sing there. Watching the auditions was quite boring, except for a very few. One which caught me attention was when a frightened 28 year old backing singer came on and the proceeded to blow the judges out of their seats with an amazing snippet of Steve Wonder’s “For Once in my Life”.

I don’t think I caught sight of her much during the culling of all the auditionees down to the final 24, but she made it through.

Then the first live show occurred and she stunned everyone again with a fabulous performance of Aretha Franklin’s “Since you’ve been gone”.

She has followed that up with further stunning performances of “My Funny Valentine” and “I am a W O M A N” making it effortlessly into the final 12, and making me a fan (I am Melinda Backup #372]

Another great performance of “Home”, although it was not a favorite of mine,

and then it was British Invasion week.

I was worried that she had chosen a really boring song “As Long as he needs me” from the musical Oliver. I downloaded Shirley Bassey’s version from YouTube, and even she couldn’t make it exciting. So was this to be Melinda’s downfall?

Actually no, it was an sensational, and currently my favourite of all her performances.

I think this woman will have a big career.

UPDATE: 5th May. Since I wrote the above Melinda has made it into the top 4. Not only that, each week she has embraced the genre that has been set the contestants and really delivered fabulous performances in every category. I have only one performance that didn’t really grab me (“Heaven knows”). One of her unofficial fan sites holds really high quality copies of each of her performances. I recomend you go there to download them

I have made MP3s from these videos you can find them on this page

If you want to make a CD of her performances then the wav files for that are here

UPDATE 19th December 2008 – the unofficial site mentioned above no longer exists.  However I am now IT director of Melinda’s Backups, a web site owned by Melinda Doolittle and licenced by her to us to operate on behalf of her fans UPDATE July 2009: and now the official fan club.  This contains all the videos, and mp3 files here, but additional exclusive videos and mp3s from post idol performances. You do have to become a member (its free – we just want to avoid spammers) to access them.
